Shopify vs. a custom site for a small retail store
Shopify is a good storefront. It is not automatically the right website. For a boot shop or a small retail store, the question is how you sell — not which logo is on the checkout.
Shopify is enough when
You mostly sell online, the catalog fits their product model, and you are fine paying their fees for a checkout people already trust. Apps can cover a lot. They also stack cost and slow the page down.
A custom site is cleaner when
The floor and the site have to share inventory with a POS (Lightspeed and friends), the brand cannot look like every other theme, or you need pages that are not a product grid — story, service, wholesale, a form that hits a real inbox. Hosting and updates stay with a person you can call.
You can mix them
A custom site with Shopify or Stripe for checkout is a normal setup. The job is that the numbers match, not that one vendor owns the whole shop.
